Gelato Fiasco and the Brunswick Area Teen Center will hold their 9th annual scooping event to support Brunswick-area youth this year on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. The Gelato Fiasco Flagship Store will donate 100 percent of sales on April 26 beyond the seasonal daily average to the Teen Center.
Last year was Gelato Fiasco’s eighth year hosting the event and another record breaking year with Gelato Fiasco donating $3,199.89 to the Teen Center; and when those funds were combined with donations from other businesses and individuals, the event raised $6.222.89 for the Teen Center! Over 1,100 people participated in the event and on average, one dish, pint of gelato, or cup of coffee was served every 40 seconds. The 7 p.m. hour was the busiest, with an item served on average every 19 seconds!
The Scoop-a-Thon was held during the store’s regular hours of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on April 27. Some 50 volunteers from across the community, including principals, teachers, community leaders, town officials, and Bowdoin College students served as celebrity scoopers throughout the event. Several entertainers also performed throughout the day.
A huge thank you to last year's sponsors: lead sponsor Mid Coast-Parkview Health; Edward Jones Investments (Topsham); Adroscoggin Bank; Big Top Deli; Clifton Hodges, DDS PA Family and Cosmetic Dentistry; Fraser Ruet Contracting; Hammond Lumber; JHR Development, LLC; Lighthouse Variety and Deli; Little Dog Coffee Shop; Priority Real Estate Group; Suzi Akerley & Kyle Cardone, Mossy Rock Landscaping.
Customers simply need to make gelato or coffee purchases at regular prices. Gelato Fiasco will donate all sales beyond the average for a similar Wednesday. Therefore, every purchase counts.
We’re really happy to be hosting the Scoop-a-Thon for the eighth year running,” said Joshua Davis, co-founder of Gelato Fiasco, before the event. “With so many celebrity scoopers helping out each year – and many flexing their scooping arms for multiple consecutive years – we estimate that Brunswick has a higher density of residents with gelato scooping experience than any other town in the United States!”
The event is so busy that Gelato Fiasco schedules extra staff and keeps its kitchen open for 18 hours to make fresh pans of gelato and continue making new batches to replace them throughout the day and night.
The Brunswick Area Teen Center is celebrating its tenth year in operation. This event, the program's only big public fundraiser each year, brings in funds that make a large impact on the program's budget.
Their on-going support is greatly appreciated by both the organization and by the area youth who we serve. We thank them in advance for all the extra work and effort they put forth for and during this day to help make it the success it has continued to be over the years,” said Jordan Cardone, Brunswick Teen Center coordinator.
The Brunswick Teen Center, located at 35 Union St., is a program of People Plus. The Center is a free, fun, social, safe and inclusive environment for local students in grades 6-12, offering recreation and socialization after school and during the summer. Members have access to free Wi-Fi, Netflix, video games, pool table, ping-pong, music, snacks and beverages and more.
The success of the annual Teen Center fundraiser inspired Gelato Fiasco to create its Scooping for Community Program, which provides an opportunity for non-profit organizations to mobilize supporters and raise funds for their organizations in the greater Brunswick and Portland areas. The program provides support to more than two dozen school and community organizations each year.
The Gelato Fiasco Flagship Store is located at 74 Maine St. in downtown Brunswick. For more information about the event, call the Brunswick Teen Center at (207) 721-0754.
